Yu Kuwabara (b.1984, Japan) has studied composition with Shin Sato and Toshihiko Hisayuki and completed her master degree at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. and Music. She has also attended several master classes including International Ensemble Modern Academy in Tokyo, Schloss Solitude Summer Academy, IMPULS Academy, Darmstadt Summer Course and received guidance from Liza Lim, Hanspeter Kyburz, Chaya Czernowin, Steven Kazuo Takasugi among others. Music performed by Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble SurPlus, Stefan Hussong, Camilla Hoitenga, Denis Patkovic and others at major venues in Asia and Europe such as Music Competition of Japan (2005, 2006 and 2009, Tokyo) and IMPULS Academy reading session by Enno Poppe and Klangforum Wien (2013, Graz), Takefu International Music Festival (2008, Fukui). She has also awarded Tokyo Wonder Site Aoyama Creator-in-Residence (2009).
She is active in collaborating with artists of other art forms. The creator collective Awai-Za was founded by Yu and others aiming at investigating a new musical engagement with Rakugo, Japanese traditional verbal entertainment. The collective made their debut featuring Rakugo performer KOKONTEI Shinsuke in 2011. She has also worked with fashion designer Michiko Suzuki and composed for runway shows for her brands, Nocturne #22 In C Sharp Minor, Op. Posth. (2012 S/S Collection and 2015 Full Collection, Tokyo), YMOYNOT (2013 A/W Collection, China).
Her scores Doll-Blind and Doll-Blind b have been published from EDITION WUNN, Germany. She is a lecturer at Toho Gakuen University of Music.
