Sergio Cote studied composition in Bogota, Colombia (2006-2011). In 2015 he completed his postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), Manchester, UK, under the tutelage of David Horne and Adam Gorb. Additionally, He has had lessons with Lindberg, Ferneyhough, Torres-Maldonado among others. His music has been performed by ensembles such as International Ensemble Modern Academy, Borealis Saxophone Quartet, and London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been awarded the Colombian National Prize for Young Composers (2011), the RNCM Gold Medal (2014) and the Scholarship to the Creation of Contemporary Music awarded by the Colombian Ministry of Culture (2014).

He had had lessons and master classes with Paul Patterson, Simon Bainbridge, Peter Swinnen and John McCabe. He had participated in festivals such as Wittener Tge für neue Kammermusik and Mixtur Barclona. In Summer 2014 he was part of the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, where he joined the Cello Composition Workshop with the piece Líneas del Raval receiving supervision by Lucas Fels and Brian Ferneyhough. In 2014-15 was part of the LPO young composers scheme and currently he is part of the Catedra Manuel de Falla in Seville, Spain. He is lecturer and tutor of composition at the Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá, Colombia.
