Bofan Ma was born in China in 1993. Since the initial point of his study in piano playing at his 4 years old, Bofan has received a coherent formal music education at both Music Elementary and Secondary School Affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SMMS), worked with two famous Chinese composers/pianists: Weihao Qiang and Jianzhong Wang. In 2011, Bofan moved to the UK and is currently studying his third year undergraduate of composition at Royal Academy of Music with support from both the Academy and Ismena Holland Prize Foundation, supervised by Mr Paul Patterson. During his study there, Bofan has been associated with a number of significant composers/educators like Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Philip Cashian, Gary Carpenter, Dan Dediu and Elaine Gould.

Bofan was the recipient of the Bronze Prize of BoDe Cup New Chamber Music Competition (Shanghai, 2006), the Grand Award of B.Tiao Scholarship Composition Competition (USA, 2008), the Third Place in National Composition Competition of New Erhu Music (Shanghai, 2010), and most recently, his work Side Effect (for solo viola and piano) was highly commended in the 2014 Alan Bush Prize. Bofan’s first big orchestral piece for solo Erhu and Chinese Traditional Symphony Orchestra, commissioned by the Chinese Music Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SCM), was successfully premiered in the 2011 Shanghai Spring International Music Festival. After moved to London, Bofan has been involved in various performances as an active composer and pianist as well, in collaboration with conductor Christopher Austin, the RAM Manson Ensemble and a number of other student musicians from the Academy. In April 2013, Bofan was chosen as one of the youngest participants to be involved in the Out At Sea Contemporary Chamber Opera Project, and attended the one-week workshop in Budapest with guidance by Péter Eӧtvӧs and Luca Francesconi. Subsequently, in November of that year, his music was performed in Shanghai Concert Hall as a part of the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the SMMS. In 2014, the featured occasions where Bofan’s music is going to be heard are: the 2014 International Piano and Multimedia Festival (London), the Academy Electroacoustic Concert Series (London), the 2014 Mise-en International Music Festival (New York), and the UPBEAT International Composition Workshop (Croatia, with instructions from Professor Joel Hoffman).
